Good afternoon everyone! Hope everyone is healthy and staying safe during this difficult time.
Question:
In Book 7, Socrates describes education as a 'turning around' of the soul. How do you think education today would look different if this was the guiding idea? Also, what else is wrong with education today? Are there any radical changes you would like to see in education (K-12 or college) today? Explain why.
Answer:
In Book 7, Socrates describes education as a "turning point" of the soul. If education today followed that same virtue like the one socrates created in the book "The Republic", then scholars today, like us would only be able to understand the true importance of the education systems. However, if we looked at education like a transformation of our value system and implemented that into our programs, it also might help some of the problems young students face in school such as bullying. In today's society, education system are built to teach students topics with such little time. In that case, we are able to learn and remember so many things when things are just being packed into topics they want us know about. Socrates on the other hand, was a strong believer that education can't be forced or rushed. Socrates also mention to the analogies of mind and sight and also said to be that the visions are clever. I think that education should not be based off of test/quiz scores, but based off of an outline that is created to build off an understanding of the subject itself.
