Question:

Do you agree with Thoreau's argument that action according to conscience (i.e moral action) is not compatible with living in a representative democracy where decisions are based on collective agreement?

Answer:

Thoreau stated that the government is supposed to be necessary, yet it is mostly complicated. In that case, the government does not do quite a good job at keeping the nation free or trained. He however, argues that there should be a government that listens to the standards/morals instead of the "majority". Thoreau believes that it is necessary to develop an approval for the right then respect for the constitution. Respect for the constitution can lead to biased steps of the people and it can lead to a war/big conflict.

  1. Yes he places the moral law higher than the law of the state. Good point!
